Gale E. Gauld, was born and raised in Fife Lake, a small rural Town in Northern Michigan. While growing up,life to me was about Cowboys, Indians, Horses, Hunting and Fishing. He is the oldest son in a family of 6 kids, 2 girls and 4 boys.  While growing up Gale's father owned a sawmill and that is when he learned he had sawdust in his blood. He started whittling as soon as he could hold a knife, it was something he knew he born to do. He would sit with his Dad and eat shell peanuts and carve out marble cages and horses. Occasionally even a car for one of his brothers.

Through the years Gale has carved a variety of things, ranging from Ornate Gun Stocks, Decoys and even a contemporary Devotional Bust at his wife's request. Like most people he spent many years raising a family and making a living. He worked for 30 years as an Operating Engineer. Gale often whittled while setting in his equipment waiting for the laborers to get done or he whittled on his lunch break. His kids still remember him carving at the kitchen table on the weekends because he did not have a workshop. The kitchen table was the next best thing. Much to his amazement his wife never said a word about that. Carving is something he has always been driven to do.

After  Gale retired, the Decoys and Gun Stocks did not hold my interest long. That type of carving was not enough of a challenge. That lack of interest led to carving horses and wild life on Fireplace Mantels and Headboards. Horses and wild life have had such an impact on Gale's life it was only natural that he would carve them.  Gale says, "It is amazing  even to me at times. When I begin to carve, the wood takes on a life of its own. The wood begins to speak its own language  and slowly each carvings evolves into something fantastic. The more I carve, the more inspired I become and the carvings become more and more dynamic. People often ask  me how long it takes to carve something. There is no definite answer to that question. No true Artist I know can answer that question."

Each one of Gale's carvings are made from the highest quality wood. All of his wood comes from a local supplier in Northern Michigan. He use this particular supplier because the supplier understands what he wants and  he makes sure each piece of wood comes from the wild and beautiful Northern Michigan area. That is part of what makes Gale's carvings come to life, that wild and beautiful spirit that comes from our North Woods.

Gale won the prestigious Exhibitor's Choice Award at the 2007 Western Design Conference.
